Learning Outcomes

  • Musicianship: The student will demonstrate fluent musicianship skills, including an understanding of music theory, proficiency with aural skills and sight reading, proficiency as a soloist on his or her main instrument, knowledge of different musical styles and historical eras, a demonstration of basic piano skills, proficiency with basic music technology, the ability to rehearse and perform collaboratively and contribute to an ensemble, and an understanding and demonstration of basic improvisation techniques.
  • Teaching: The student will gain teaching experience in a variety of situations, will demonstrate an understanding of classroom music programs and their function within the public and private school systems, will demonstrate an understanding of teaching philosophies, and will be prepared to enter a teacher certification program.
  • Musicianship for teaching: The student will demonstrate musicianship skills specific to teaching, including competency in conducting, arranging, and coaching a vocal or instrumental ensemble, as well as knowledge of instrumental families.

Program Review

Program review represents Chapman's commitment to excellence in academic programs through periodic review of educational effectiveness. Every 5 to 7 years, program faculty members prepare a self-study report, which is reviewed by external, expert reviewers, numerous Chapman faculty governance councils and committees, and the Office of the Provost. Program review provides an opportunity for each program to reflect on its educational effectiveness as well as its contribution to the university's mission and strategic plan. The results of program review guide institutional planning, budgeting and decision-making.
