Learning Outcomes

  • Personalized Education: Students will construct a research project, collect primary and secondary sources, and critically evaluate these sources as historical evidence.
  • Student Writing: Students will demonstrate the ability to properly structure a thesis-driven essay, apply appropriate methods of citation, and use a clear writing style that conveys historical knowledge, ideas and evidence in a mature, readily understood manner.
  • Faculty-Student Research: Students will prepare and revise a research paper which they will present effectively at a formally organized history conference and submit for a paper prize or publication in a respected history journal, especially the award-winning Voces Novae: Chapman University Historical Review.
  • Critical Thinking: Students will learn to recognize historical arguments regarding controversial historical questions and to formulate and support an original historical argument using primary and secondary sources.
  • Quantitative Reasoning: Demonstrates an ability to analyze, interpret, and communicate relevant quantitative information connected to research topic.

Program Review

Program review represents Chapman's commitment to excellence in academic programs through periodic review of educational effectiveness. Every 5 to 7 years, program faculty members prepare a self-study report, which is reviewed by external, expert reviewers, numerous Chapman faculty governance councils and committees, and the Office of the Provost. Program review provides an opportunity for each program to reflect on its educational effectiveness as well as its contribution to the university's mission and strategic plan. The results of program review guide institutional planning, budgeting and decision-making.
